Welcome to Bourbon Week on the blog!
Last summer Dan and I participated in New Brunswick’s Restaurant Week, and among all the wonderful meals we encountered, the one that
haunts my dreams stays with me to this very day involved bourbon.
Vanilla Bourbon Creme Brûlée: it was the perfect ending to an already perfect meal. The notes of caramel and vanilla from the bourbon complemented the simply sweet vanilla custard so splendidly, I was dying to ask the waiter for the recipe.
But then I realized how doing so would be both weird and useless. Even if he did give me the recipe, I had no desire to make creme brûlée at home. The idea of lighting sugar on fire in my studio apartment sounded ever so slightly irresponsible in my mind.
So I left, dreaming of vanilla and bourbon for many months.
Until it hit me: I could recreate those flavors in a cupcake! Cupcakes are way more approachable for us home cooks, and usually don’t involve lighting sugar on fire. Instead, they involve plenty of fluffy frosting that I could spike with bourbon.

So that was my first plan, to just top vanilla cupcakes with a bourbon buttercream. I went about whisking together my cupcake ingredients and began eyeing the bourbon…
“the cupcake should really have some bourbon in it too. For continuity’s sake…”
and so, in went the bourbon. What came out of my oven could quite possibly be the classiest cupcake I’ve ever concocted.
The bitterness of the bourbon cooks off during the baking process, leaving you with the more pleasant flavors bourbon has to offer.
I was going to share these Vanilla Bourbon Cupcakes with you for Valentine’s Day, but really, these are just delicious cupcakes that would be great for any party you plan on throwing in 2015. Though the flavors sound fancy, the prep is as simple as ever. It’s just a matter of whisking together ingredients, pouring, baking, and then piping frosting.
No lighting anything on fire, no complex processes, just the joy involved with impressing all your friends and family with some fancy schmancy cupcakes.
Later this week I’ll be sharing another recipe involving this heavenly bourbon buttercream, so be sure to stay tuned or subscribe if you haven’t yet!
